Uganda Breaks Ground On Cement Plant
The facility will produce 6,000 tonnes a day of clinker.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on 12 September to launch the construction of a clinker and cement production plant in the Moroto district of Uganda. President Yoweri Museveni attended the ceremony.
The factory is being set up by West International Holding, a subsidiary of China West Cement. China Railway 20th Bureau Group Corporation will carry out the construction work.
The facility will have the capacity to produce 6,000 tonnes a day of clinker. Upon completion in two years' time, the plant is expected to produce 2.2 million tonnes a year (t/y) of clinker and 1 million t/y of cement. The total investment cost is about US$300 million.
Uganda currently has a cement production capacity of about 4.5 million t/y. Demand is projected to increase by 15% a year driven by the expansion of the oil and gas sector and infrastructure development.
The country currently imports around 2.8 million t/y of clinker at a cost of about US$380 million.
