South Africa Launches Road Projects In KwaZulu-Natal
The upgrades aim to boost the local economy and create jobs.
Sipho Hlomuka, KwaZulu-Natal's executive council member for transport, community safety and liaison, opened the upgraded road D1252 in Loskop, Estcourt on 30 May, before launching R1 billion (US$50 million) of new construction projects in the region.
The D1252 was upgraded from gravel to blacktop at a cost of R114 million. It links to the N3, which connects eThekwini and Johannesburg.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport recently launched a R49 million rehabilitation project for the main road P189 in Ladysmith.
On 1 June, Hlomuka attended a contractor handover ceremony for the construction of the R126 million Buffalo River Bridge in Tugela Ferry. The bridge will link uMsinga and Nquthu.
The following day, he launched a R580 million project to rehabilitate Marine Drive, also known as P359, connecting Port Shepstone, Margate, and other key tourism hubs.
On 3 June, a R34 million project to construct the Cabane River Bridge was launched in the Harry Gwala District.
“In both the State of the Province Address and the Department of Transports’ Budget Policy Speech, we recommitted this government to focus on infrastructure delivery. This is important in improving the local economy and changing the people’s lives. We will be crisscrossing all the corners of the province, handing over projects and interacting with communities on projects with challenges, said Hlomuka.
"We are doing this mindful of the fact that some of the projects have been delayed by the reprioritisation of resources due to floods. Equally, we are also mindful of the challenge of ageing infrastructure and the urgent need to preserve and improve the condition of our road network. The roll-out of infrastructure delivery will empower local emerging contractors and create much-needed jobs for the unemployed youth."
