Mozambique's EDM Selects Consultants For Floating Solar Study
The study will consider the viability of floating solar at the Chicamba dam.
Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) has contracted Norway’s Norconsult in joint venture with Germany’s Dornier Suntrace to conduct a feasibility study and environmental impact assessment (EIA) for a floating solar prospect at Chicamba dam in Manica Province, Mozambique.
The value of the contract is US$1,086,935 and the duration is 22 months.
The consultants are expected to provide a full feasibility study of a floating photovoltaic power plant in Chicamba reservoir, outlining the technical and financial viability, as well as the environmental impact of the power plant infrastructure and interconnection lines.
EDM says the aim of introducing the floating solar option is to provide additional power generation capacity while saving arable land for agricultural purposes by utilising existing open water surfaces. The plan is to contract solar capacity from independent power producers.
The EIA will consider the impact on flora and fauna, both on land and water, as well as on local communities and fishing activities.
The project is being supported by the African Development Bank.
