Liberia Trials New Technology To Repair Roads
A pilot project is being carried out on 250 metres of road.
Blue Climate Deutschland, a German infrastructure development company, is demonstrating a new road surface technology in a pilot project in Liberia.
UNDERBOLD-POD30 is being piloted on 250 metres of road in Grand Bassa County.
In January 2022, the Liberian government and Blue Climate Deutschland signed a Memorandum of Understanding to improve the country’s road infrastructure focusing mainly on rural areas.
The benefits of the UNDERBOLD-POD30, which is new to Liberia, are enormous, local media quoted Blue Climate Deutschland technical engineer Friedrich Steck as saying: it increases the load capacity, increases the stiffness modulus and increases elasticity, with a reduction in setting time, to name just a few.
UNDERBOLD-POD30 is also resistant to frost and heat, and water penetration is reduced with the addition of a hydrophobic wax emulsion.
The company will train local Liberian staff to operate heavy-duty equipment and build roads using UNDERBOLD-POD30.
Liberian President George Manneh Weah's government has been sourcing funding from international donor partners, including the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank, to construct and rehabilitate roads in the country.
