The Ethiopian government has signed a roadmap agreement with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) to develop up to 500MW of solar energy projects.

The deal was signed on 18 August during the visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan to Ethiopia, along with more than a dozen memoranda of understanding (MoU).

The agreement falls under the UAE’s Etihad 7 programme and includes Masdar developing two initial solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in the regions of Afar and Somali.

The roadmap agreement follows on from the MoU signed in March 2021 between the two parties to develop up to 500MW of solar projects in Ethiopia. The aim at the time was to complete power purchase agreements later that year, and to commence commercial operations in 2022.

Etihad 7 is a global development fund launched by the UAE to provide 100 million people across the African continent with clean electricity by 2035 through the development of 20GW of renewables projects.
