
East Africa Standard Gauge Railway Project On Track
Uganda hosted a meeting of Northern Corridor Integration Projects member states.
Uganda's Minister for Works and Transport and Chair of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Development Cluster, Katumba Wamala led a meeting in Kampala on 26 May to assess the SGR’s progress among the Northern Corridor Integration Projects (NCIP) member states.
Kenyan Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Roads and Transport Kipchumba Murkomen, Rwanda's Minister of Infrastructure Dr Enest Nsabimana and South Sudan’s Minister of Roads and Bridges, Simon Mijak attended the meeting.
The ministers lauded the completion of the Mombasa-Nairobi-Naivasha SGR section. They also noted the preparations for constructing the Naivasha-Malaba, Malaba-Kampala-Kigali and Tororo-Gulu-Nimule-Juba sections.
Construction of the Naivasha-Malaba and Malaba-Kampala SGR sections is slated to begin in the 2023/4 fiscal year. Feasibility studies for the Kampala-Kigali and Tororo-Gulu-Nimule sections are complete, while those for the Nimule-Juba section are ongoing.
The ministers agreed to invite Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to join the SGR Cluster under the NCIPs.
