Beninese Electricity Production Company (SBEE) signed a contract on 10 August with Japan’s Toyota Tsusho Corporation for the construction of a 25MW solar project in the Pobè region of Benin.

Toyota Tsusho will develop the solar photovoltaic (PV) facility with RMT, a subsidiary of France's Eiffage. The plant is scheduled to be completed in 2024.

According to Toyota Tsusho, this is the first large-scale renewable energy project in West Africa executed by a Japanese company. The plant is being developed as a public-private partnership (PPP).

Benin plans to install 150MW of solar power capacity by 2026.

The Pobè region is already home to the 25MW Defissol solar PV plant, which was commissioned in July 2022 and also constructed by RMT.
