Ethiopian Construction Exhibition Promotes Affordable and Scalable Solutions
Discussions at the 2026 edition of the Big 5 Construct Ethiopia exhibition spotlighted the need for practical, affordable and scalable solutions across Ethiopia’s housing, infrastructure and commercial developments.
Held in late April in Addis Ababa and organised by Dubai-headquartered dmg events and local partner Ethel Events, the exhibition saw more than 180 companies from more than 20 countries in attendance, with country pavilions from Germany, Turkiye, Italy, Saudi Arabia and others.
Big 5 Construct Ethiopia is aimed at delivering value to the Ethiopian construction industry by creating a platform for international engagement, knowledge transfer and market development. The event is envisaged to connect local professionals with international manufacturers, suppliers and service providers, offering access to the latest technologies, materials and best practices.
According to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure, the country’s construction sector plays a vital role in driving national transformation, industrialisation and urban development. An August 2025 report by the authority outlined several priority areas for continued sector development, including streamlining processes, strengthening institutional capacity, modernising regulatory frameworks and enhancing project delivery standards. Addressing these areas is expected to support greater efficiency, investment and long-term growth across the industry.
Insights shared during the Big 5 Talks, held at Big 5 Construct Ethiopia, touched on several of these challenges. Officials from strategic bodies such as the Ethiopian Association of Civil Engineers (EACE), Workplace Health, Safety & Environment Association of Ethiopia (WHSEAE) and Association of Ethiopian Architects brought participants up to speed on the situation on the ground as well as practical solutions.
The event also saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding between EACE and WHSEAE aimed at strengthening Ethiopia’s construction sector through enhanced capacity building, knowledge sharing and professional development, with a strong focus on health, safety and international best practices.
Digital Twins
In one of the sessions, Zenamarkos Zinabie, a civil engineer at Addis Ababa University, presented the digital twin technology and its potential for real-time monitoring of construction projects.
With traditional construction management methods driving delays, cost overruns and preventable safety incidents, Zinabie noted that digital twins combined with real-time monitoring offer a data-driven alternative that improves decision-making across the entire project lifecycle. The technology can help Ethiopian construction projects reduce rework, improve safety outcomes and compensate for fragmented site reporting practices.
The recommended approach for the country is to start small (component or asset twins), then scale gradually to system and enterprise-level twins.
Green Project Management
In a talk on green project management and industrialised construction for a circular built environment, EACE president Eng Amanuel Hailemariam said Ethiopia’s construction challenges, which span rapid urbanisation, housing demand, cost pressure and climate risk, require a shift from conventional methods to green project management (GPM) and industrialised, circular construction.
GPM, he said, moves beyond the ‘do no harm’ approach to champion regenerative projects that create long-term environmental, social and economic value, aligning projects with environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles.
In industrialised construction, Hailemariam said precast and hollowcore technologies could reduce concrete use by 40-50%, leading to faster construction, safer sites, predictable schedules and lower lifecycle emissions and costs. He presented a local case study featuring ECWC-Rising Hongfa, a joint venture of Ethiopian Construction Works Corporation and China-based Rising Hongfa Group, which uses hollowcore slabs, recycled rubber products and industrial precast components, demonstrating circular economy principles through waste-to-resource models.
Ethiopia can leapfrog traditional construction models by combining GPM, industrialisation and circular materials, said Hailemariam, but this requires public-sector leadership, standards and procurement reform.
Occupational Safety
On workplace safety in Ethiopia, Kidus Abay, president of WHSEAE, stated that occupational health and safety, especially in construction, is a systemic national challenge, but that most injuries and fatalities are preventable with better enforcement, training and safety culture.
Ethiopia has one of Africa’s highest work-related injury mortality rates, Abay noted, with a construction injury prevalence of 50.8%. Moreover, fatalities are significantly underreported, the president said.
The major gaps identified fall into four categories, Abay said:
Regulatory and enforcement gaps: Fragmented oversight, weak inspections, informal contractors;
Competency and training gaps: Severe shortage of safety engineers, limited training, language barriers;
Operational gaps: Low personal protective equipment (PPE) usage (only 33%), high slips, falls and struck-by injuries;
Cultural gaps: Fatalist mindset, low commitment from management, under-reporting.
To improve the situation, Abay proposed employing centralised digital inspection and permitting systems, mandating third-party safety audits for high-risk projects, establishing safety budget escrows (1-2% of project value), and undertaking toolbox talks and safety signage in local languages.
Ethiopian stakeholders must treat safety as a core value, not a compliance checkbox, said Abay, integrating workplace safety into tendering, management behaviour and daily site operations.
Affordable Housing
In a fireside chat on enabling affordable housing, Ethiopian architects opined that the country’s affordable housing gap can only be scaled through integrated design-to-delivery models that combine architectural innovation, industrialised construction and sustainability, without compromising livability or long-term value.
Modular, prefabricated and rapid-build systems were presented as critical enablers for housing development, providing speed, cost certainty and quality control. Factory-controlled processes reduce material waste, site risks and labour inefficiencies, the speakers noted, and are particularly suitable to meet urban housing demand with tight budgets and timelines.
Meanwhile, cost efficiency could be achieved through architectural innovation, the speakers noted. Smart unit planning, repeatable layouts and structural optimisation could reduce material volumes, while design simplification (without aesthetic compromise) could become a major lever for affordability. Passive design strategies could also help lower operational costs for occupants.
The speakers also brought up integrating sustainability into the market. Housing affordability is not just about build cost, it includes lifecycle cost, the speakers said. Early coordination between developers, architects and contractors improves feasibility, while sustainability principles (energy efficiency and durable materials) protect long-term asset value.
Infusing Traditional Designs in Architecture
The idea of bridging tradition and innovation in Ethiopian architectural design was also discussed during a presentation by Rahel Lemma, vice-president of the Association of Ethiopian Architects.
Lemma told the audience that Ethiopia’s architectural future should not replace tradition with modernity, but rather bridge them, using heritage as a design resource rather than a limitation. Heritage could be looked at as a living system, Lemma said, with well-known Ethiopian architecture such as Tukul housing design and the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela in the Amhara region remaining relevant to daily life and not just being seen as monuments.
There is an economic logic to using culturally rooted designs, Lemma explained, with the use of local materials leading to lower costs and higher cultural value, and adaptive reuse preserving identity while reducing capital expenditure. Community-driven projects could also improve ownership and long-term success. In contrast, employing imported modern materials would mean higher costs and low contextual value.
The next Big 5 Construct Ethiopia is planned to take place in Addis Ababa on 8-10 April 2027.
